What Does ‘Robust’ Really Mean? Building Financial IT and Reporting Systems That Survive Supervisory Scrutiny and Stress

Supervisors increasingly use the word robust when assessing banks’ financial IT and regulatory reporting systems—but what does robustness actually mean in practice? Drawing on EBA expectations, DORA requirements, and recent supervisory actions, this panel explores how robustness goes far beyond uptime and cyber security. It covers the ability of financial IT and reporting infrastructures to produce accurate, complete, auditable, and timely data under both normal conditions and stress, with clear governance, automation, traceable data lineage, and credible recovery capabilities. Focusing on mid-sized banks operating with lean teams, the discussion addresses where supervisors see the biggest gaps today, how spreadsheet-heavy environments clash with EBA expectations, and when weaknesses in financial IT systems escalate from operational findings into supervisory measures, capital consequences, or business restrictions.
